Tipping Utopia is an artistic and residential project, initiated by Stephanie Maher, which will explore both the past and the future of Ponderosa. Tipping Utopia will be an active and ongoing presence at Ponderosa from 2019 to 2022. During this time, this program will imagine the future possibilities for Ponderosa, and it will also engage in an archiving process, inviting historical engagement from past Ponderosa participants.
Tipping Utopia will be embracing the poetics of process as we stamp the foothills towards the future. This work will include invited participants who have been involved in Ponderosa over the last decade-plus, alongside newcomers and returnees, and will be partly an effort to imagine new potential at this site.
This constellation of events will begin in February 2019. We articulate and celebrate confusion, leftist complaints, bliss, conviction, dedication, loyalty, and mystery. In the end, we hope to have a communal archive and a performative documentation that shall be presented and articulated in myriad ways.
Tipping Utopia events
Guardians of the social equilibrium, we are tipping utopia!
From the seed of Ponderosa, we will be a dynamic and entwined organism. Tipping Utopia invites a funeral, a death, a rebirthing, and myriad such things. By embracing the poetics of process, we are initiating the Tipping Utopia research site for 2019-2021! We want to document our ethical deeds and acts of artistic and ecological labour, over the last two decades. This may come in the form of a choreography, an installation, a collectively written sci-fi novel or a social art practice. We don’t know yet.
This constellation of events will start in February 2019. We articulate and celebrate confusion, leftist complaints, bliss, conviction, dedication, loyalty, and the mystery in all things. In the end we hope to have a communal archive and performative documentation that will be exhibited in a myriad of ways.
An endless splinterosa of particles
An introduction of sorts for Tipping Utopia — by Stephanie Maher, February 2019
As Tipping Utopia gets underway and everything splinters and morphs, Ponderosa could possibly appear as.....Rambo 2 or Ponderosa 2, or if things only get worse, SPLINTEROSA. This can be seen as new wiring for beginners, metamorphosis, the new generation xyz. Who is in charge of your DNA anyway? When there are no more animals, still even dead pigeons could revive. Poppies are airborne after all, why not some Kaiser Regional Development! Hey, we’re back to Stolpe! While all of Ponderosa chases Alice down the opposite hole, what will be the new container? some Splinterosa?
The Archive? Each individual leaves a trace, juxtaposing a collectively made one, an archive. Not only do the sweet and ecstatic utopian moments exist, but it’s also important to name the rub and frictions between what was and what is today. Many of us have developed covert survival tactics and devotional body practices in response to and inspired by the Ponderosa environment. Lets interrogate that WHO, HOW, WHY power structures that circumnavigate Ponderosa.
Wanting access to where questions are being asked or decisions made?
We are gathering around what is now, around all temporary, fleeting moments in dance/body based arts and our shifting environments and passion for performance-making and off-kilter thinking.
Tipping Utopia Medicine - Garden as Source. The garden will be a source of renewal and longevity for the Ponderosa project as it goes through this utopian tipping process of associating, splintering, morphing, the normality of decay and change.
sending sci-fi spores? freedom to release Ponderosa seeds? we float her down the canal and fluidly accept this oasis of association? our unknown future and sustainable Stolpe entrepreneurs? or we hit a metal fence and fragmentation continues into an endless splinterosa of particles… STAY TUNED
How can we be brave?
Ruminations on the motivations, by Yoav Admoni, January 2019
how can we be brave enough to stare at our fading corpses and decide to be organ donors? donating ourselves to ourselves to create a new Frankenstein that hopefully we will not reject.
how can we accelerate our composting process or how can we enjoy the heavy stinky smell leaping out of the turning of all the things we have piled up and left aside to deal with later?
this is not a mercy death of an old sick lady it is the murder of a dog gone stray
its a communal sacrifice ritual with a yet unknown symbolism, it's a cult-horror B movie from the future.
its a complicit rebellion, its the crystallisation of a conflict, it's letting go of the one object you thought you will save when fire starts and find the nearest exit which maybe behind you. pay close attention. we are gonna cut off his head and use it as a cacti nursery.
let's come together to dig our grave, to think of futures we will not be a part of, to reclaim the present, to carve a new landfill, let's burn it and spray the ashes on sweaty bodies working on a new garden so our past will drip off of their skins into the moisturised soil of our flower beds.
Tipping Utopia supports a positive fragmentation of artistic directorship and potential futures. We mark contributions and individually-related projects that take place both right here and also far from Ponderosa.
