Sharing Homes is a short, shared residency, facilitated by Aviv Sheyn. It is an invitation to join a temporary collective.
In a recent lecture in Berlin, the French theorist and philosopher Julia Kristeva outlined some thoughts about culture and freedom. Among the many points that she addressed, she stated that freedom is the ability to share a creative singularity, in relationship with others.
This starting point — to make something new from our combined efforts -- is what underlies Sharing Homes. How can we actually share? How can we connect our symbolic landscapes? How can we participate in a combined creative act? One way into this problem is to allow for a physical space to share and collaborate — a core. A room. A home.
You are invited to be a participant in this process — to make a home, through contributing, combining, and sharing.
A home is a place of privacy, a place of trust. When I show you my room, my home, I show you also the way my body exists in space, the way I spend my time. When you show me your home, you show me your uniqueness, your energy, your personal history.
A home contains multitudes — objects, memories, clothes, furniture, books, ghosts. How can we invite each other to each others’ rooms, into each others’ homes? How can homes be shared? Can this exist as an artistic act?
Sharing Homes will be an effort to explore the possibility of hosting as an artistic act and creative process — the act of inviting inside is a starting-point, and the process of sharing, of combining, of collaborating, is central to our focus.
We will do this by undertaking collaborative research to investigate body and energetic practices, rituals, listening, and softness. We will aim to make a space for all to share their own artistic impulses, and open new ways of being together, in a collaborative, ephemeral shared home.
A temporary collective
The invitation to participate in Sharing Homes is an invitation to join a temporary collective, for six days. To live together, dance, make food, go for walks, perform, create, play cards. And, at the same time, through our shared curiosities, to slowly shape a combined little home.
We will work with scores, rituals, and invitations from what we bring as group. We will also work in relationship to Ponderosa’s history, and with the reality of that history — the spaces, the Living Library, the landscape. Participants are invited to share their own work, and to contribute to a collective involvement among all. There are no limits to what this shared work could be, what form it might take, how it might exist in the world — we will approach this question in-the-moment, as a question to provoke thought, discussion, collaboration.
We will work with the idea of creating spaces, both personal and collective. We also talk and think about a larger context of society, community, and lived experience. We can also have time to watch a movie, or the stars. We include all.
