The P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package offers an artistic engagement all through the summer of 2018, combining the two modules of P.O.R.C.H. — in June and August — together with a self-directed residency or workshop engagement in July.
The P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package facilitates those who want to commit to a full season of personal and aesthetic renewal and metamorphosis, in a trusting and collaborative atmosphere.
Participants in the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package undertake both the P.O.R.C.H. Improvisation and Training Module in June, and the P.O.R.C.H. Performance and Choreographic Synthesis Module in August. For the time in between, in July, participants are offered the opportunity to spend time at Ponderosa — either in residency, or participating in workshops and events.
This time in July — between the intense commitment of the June and August modules — can be a time of personal artistic research, reflection, relaxation, and artistic and community engagement. It allows P.O.R.C.H. participants to make a full-season commitment to the work that they are undertaking as part of the program, while also allowing for a pause-for-breath between the two poles of the June and August modules.
Options and approaches
There are two possible variations of the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package, depending on how participants choose to spend their time during July — either spending July as a time for a self-directed residency, or using July as a time for undertaking Ponderosa workshops. These two variations are reflected in the costs for undertaking the package, which are outlined here. However, both approaches offer multiple possibilities, which adapt and reflect your artistic, personal, and social aims and intentions. Both are outlined below.
P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package 1 — July as a self-directed residency
Participants in the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package spend three weeks in July at Ponderosa (exact details and dates are given below), along with the other modules in June and August. During this time, participants can engage in a self-directed residency process, using all of the available facilities at Ponderosa, to further their own work or research, to explore ideas, to dream outside of the day-to-day, to collaborate with other participants, or to dive into everything that feels engaging, enticing, urgent, or new.
Some may treat this time as a period of quiet reflection and renewal, between the two main P.O.R.C.H. modules of the summer. Others may choose to get some steps further on a longer-term project. Others might want to relax in a stimulating and inventive atmosphere, ride bikes, go swimming, visit Berlin, climb trees, fall in love, or anything else. Any and all of these things can be options for how to shape this time. The summer is a container waiting to be filled.
Ponderosa has a long history of being a place for residencies, retreat, renewal, and reinvention, and we hope to make it possible for participants in P.O.R.C.H. to be able to see and experience this side of Ponderosa, in the course of investigating their own artistic questions and concerns.
P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package 2 — July undertaking workshops at Ponderosa
As outlined, participants in the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package spend three weeks in July at Ponderosa (exact details and dates are given below), along with the other P.O.R.C.H. modules in June and August. During this time in July, participants can chose to be energetically involved in the activities of Ponderosa by undertaking workshops from the plethora of options available at Ponderosa in July.
Participants in the the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package can select up to three different workshops to undertake, and can use this time as a dynamic and diligent time for engaging in the physical and conceptual turbulence and inspiration that the middle of the summer always provides at Ponderosa.
The exact line-up of available workshops can alter slightly over time, as new details are revealed and new options are added, so if you are curious about the possibility of undertaking this variation of the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package, please keep an eye on the latest information about the summer workshop options available in July at Ponderosa, and get ready to dive in.
Community and engagement
Participants in either option offered for undertaking the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package will also have the opportunity to engage with each other, and with other artists, and with the local community, through offering and exchanging daily or morning practices during the month of July.
There is no obligation to do this — everyone is totally free to skip it. However, we have found, over the years, that many of the people who come to spend time at P.O.R.C.H. and at Ponderosa have innumerable unique practices, skills, interests, and curiosities that they are eager to share, and we hope to provide an outlet through which participants can learn more about each other, and about the practices, customs, and tendencies that they find inspiring or rejuvenating, or even just necessary and crucial.
There is no set structure to this aspect of the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package — it will be something that we will all figure out together in the moment (itself an articulation of the venerable and well-trodden practice of many at Ponderosa — that of non-structural improvisation in both art and life).
To give an idea of what might come up, here are some practices and related ideas that have previously been shared at P.O.R.C.H. and Ponderosa over the years:
So, if you have something to share, or if you are curious about what others might offer, please jump aboard!
Dates and details
Dates for the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package:
The dates of the full P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package do not cover the entire duration of the months of June, July, and August 2018 — this is due to scheduling constraints related to the organisation and administration of the summer schedule at Ponderosa. Participants in the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package will be required to leave Ponderosa during these short periods between activities, and then return on the announced arrival day for the beginning of the next block. If potential participants have questions about the possible ways of spending these intervening times, please contact us to discuss further.
How to apply
If you feel that you are ready to jump into the artistic transformation that P.O.R.C.H. allows, you can apply by email for either one or both modules, or for the P.O.R.C.H. Summer Package. Reductions in costs are available for participants who commit either to undertaking both modules, or to undertaking the summer package. We highly recommend committing to as long a stay at P.O.R.C.H. as is possible, for an expansive range of body-based techniques and compositional forms, to enliven your work as an artist, performer, improviser, or teacher. All details of costs and available funding and support are provided here.
To ensure that participants receive individual and unique mentoring, consideration, and feedback, places in all modules are strictly limited, and we recommend applying early.
To apply, please send a current Curriculum Vitae and an accompanying letter of interest, which outlines your reasons for feeling that you are well-suited to participating in PO.R.C.H. 2018, by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
