Winter Artist Exchange |

The Winter Artist Exchange is a three-week open residency which will happen at Ponderosa. You are invited to participate. Applications are open to all interested people and groups — including, but not limited to, artists, researchers, curators, dancers, and writers. This time of the Winter Artist Exchange is offered as an opportunity for artistic work and research, in a collaborative environment, together with other participants.

For this years’ Library Hibernation, facilitated by Diana Thielen and Florence Freitag, we would like to work around and with ideas of “embodied thinking” and expand the idea of thoughts and theory beyond words.
Starting from questions like how to move with words, letters or books, we would like to explore — through movement and somatic exchanges but also through discussions, writing and reading prompts, improvisations and meditations — how to understand concepts and theories differently, and transfer this knowledge into the everyday. In a very practical way, we also would like to work on the idea of a living library. Which books are present in the library, which books are needed, which stories are told? How can theory become practice and vice versa and how much does fiction tell us about our every life?

Winter Writing Retreat · With Carrie Hampel |

Group writing retreat with coordination by Carrie Hampel of shared readings and feedback sessions with other writers. Open to playwrights, journalists, fiction and non-fiction authors, and performance makers working on text / dialogue work.
Carrie will allow time during the residency for writers to read their work if they wish, and to give each other feedback as required. Writers and storytellers of all kinds are welcome to work on their fiction or non-fiction, theatre or performance plays, essays, articles, short stories, book projects or novels during the retreat. Garden Club is an ongoing series of gatherings in the Ponderosa garden — ranging from artistic research, to practical skill-sharing, to the hands-on dirty work of garden care — inviting engagement with the ongoing interplay of ecology, food, somatics, and local landscape in which the garden lives.
These events are a relaxed and emergent ongoing process, and they have their own newsletter — sign up if you’re interested in staying up-to-date about it all. They are overseen by Shelley Etkin, Leo Kay, Stephanie Maher, and Leonardo Cocucci. |

Sharing a weekend of Bread baking, guided by The Bakery of Slow Ideas. We will integrate kundalini yoga and other somatic practices that address the digestive system and the microorganisms that guide our life prana and its happy absorption. An in-depth and ritualized context for reflection and the digestion of artistic ideas.
These elements will coexist and contribute to the sourdough bread baking process and its togetherness factor- the basics, the simple things, the aliveness of the hundreds of years old sourdough starter and the clever insides of us coming into focus through psychophysical awareness. |

Don Hanson has been a profound teacher to many artists. Being introduced with his work in Germany in 2019 at the Tanzkongress Ponderosa invites Don to continue spreading this process throughout the international dance community. His work is non-dogmatic and deeply challenges us to stay in the body for direct knowledge and intuitive guidance. We work with his guidance in an intimately led group process while learning to take responsibility for our own journey to heal.
BhaktiChi Is a process of cleansing, purifying, awakening and enlightening. As we check in with our belief systems as artists and laymen, we are given tools how to embrace our own gifts. By raising our physical body vibration and transmitting Chi energies we can stay interconnected, accepting of ourselves and continue to bring our best to all we hope to accomplish. |

Beltane Residency |

What is Beltane? The beginning of May, halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. We will light a fire together to celebrate this day and start our creative growth for the spring. The ground will be thawed and the plants will be coming up from the earth. Our energy and creativity will start to emerge from our minds and bodies.
Coral Short, Adi Brief and Caitlin Fisher are collaborating to bring a spring multimedia residency to Ponderosa. During the days we will have three studios to work together in, including the newly-constructed and heated accessible Light Castle. We can enjoy our meals on the porch overlooking the luscious budding gardens of Ponderosa's matriarch. Our previous dynamic gatherings have brought incredibly talented people together from Berlin and around the world. This residency is a chance to finish your project or start a new one — be it video, sound, performance, or something else. We will provide a projector for artists’ talks and movie nights. We strive to create an art-making utopia for a full twelve days — a magical space to raise up queer and feminist artists’ unique and diverse practices. This is a safer space in which to realise your dreams, try out something new, research ideas, or just read that stack of books you’ve been collecting. We find people get a lot done during these twelve days outside cities' distracting energies. We encourage people to share their morning movement practices with us in the beautiful studios. Vegetarian dinners are an event every night full of idea sharing, stories and laughter. We all share in cooking and kitchen cleaning to lower our costs. Gluten-free and vegan options will be available. If you are not free during this time we encourage you to invite your friends who may benefit from this special time and place. Garden as Studio Lab is a research laboratory exploring relations between body and land. The Ponderosa garden will be a site for learning, care, and creation. In June 2020, this ten-day period includes ongoing gardening tasks in exchange for food and housing, daily facilitated sessions with Shelley Etkin, and independent artistic research time with possibilities for feedback, exchange, and mentorship. Application are welcome from practitioners with ecological sensitivities from any field.

The Air Camp Summer Artist Exchange is a series of individual and collaborative residencies and retreats, hosted by Ponderosa’s visiting artists — and you. Take some breathing space, weave an individual structure, and find refuge.
For the first time ever, the summer months of June and July are held for visitors for retreats and residencies to create your work around our gardens and our studios. During this time, there will also be communal classes and events, instigating new possibilities to use our infrastructure and by inviting collective processes for inclusion and embodied dialogue. The Air Camp Gathering/ CORE is a Reunion of the San Francisco based performance company CORE (1993- 1998)- with Jules Beckman, Jess Curtis, Keith Hennessy, Stanya Kahn, Stephanie Maher and co-conspirators. This gathering is a reunion after not all being in the same room for twenty years — and we invite you all to join.
The AIRCAMP Gathering, a rebuttal of sharing the San Fransisco 90's history with “Entertainment for the apocalpyse” repertory! This could be a transcendental funeral rehearsal. We are calling all Witches. We are calling the past and the future.There will be a week-long wending through workshops, films, drumming, songs, concerts, archiving, alchemy, lectures, discussions, casual walks, sewing circles and ritual settings for our futures. From late July to mid August 2020, the Color Block series will present four weeks of People-of-Color-centered divergent programming at Ponderosa.
Color Block is a space held by and created for people of color to work, play, and experiment around performance, improvisation and activism, hosted by Joy Mariama Smith. We aim to collectively and collaboratively focus on perseverance, resistance, freedom and healing. The programming that forms the Color Block series will provide opportunities for various explorations of radical kinship, will highlight intersectional politics, and will create spaces for those of us on the periphery.

The school of tender thinking develops tools to change our way of thinking by working with the energy of the serpent/dragon. It teaches us to think from the heart, the skin, the glands, the limpic brain. The school of tender thinking brings the body in an altered body-mindstate induced by the energy of Oxumare, Quetzalcoatl, and the Dragon tradition as it was cultivated in Europe. The core of these weeks is to awaken some spiritual dimensions in the body mind for personal transformation and political activism. All the participants will experience an altered body mind state of the snake that can fly, that is not longer punished to creep eternally on the ground.

As art-makers and supporters, we are in the field of professional pretending. We find ourselves navigating without blueprints or reliable maps. We embark on many journeys with self-built compasses and overheard rumours about the stars. Our accumulated, precarious piles of knowledge are composed through years of random encounters, web searches and gates opened by others. It is often the case that we stumble upon the dramaturgical role, a clearing located on the crossroad of many paths. We come from dance, theatre, theory, visual arts, literature, we bring our heritage into our practice as we craft our eyes, ears and mouths into working tools. The P.O.R.C.H. Dramaturgy Module is a space of reflection and experimentation around what dramaturgy is. We wish to foster individual approaches through a communal gathering of colleagues.
