“Do you have conscious — or perhaps unconscious — fantasies of playing mad electric guitar and screaming “FUUUCK!” into a microphone?”
Find Your Inner Rockstar is an intensive laboratory for artists working in the fields of dance, music, performance art and installation.
This workshop and performance experiment originated with Pipaluk Supernova, and in this special edition, Pipaluk and Angela Muck Muñoz will be collaborating to share their unique, unabashed, screaming, howling, sacred and profane rockstar knowledge.
Workshop into performance experiment
The workshop: Pipaluk and Angela will be teaching improvisation tools and techniques, alongside vocal training and hands-on work with electric instruments and microphones. No previous knowledge of musical instruments is required, just a curiosity about noise and sound and volume. In parallel, the workshop integrates dance work and choreographic tools based on release, contact, and improvisation techniques.
In the workshop, participants will be exploring an open yet highly intense framework for creating multidimensional performance spaces where both audience and performers are constantly challenged to move into unknown territory.
The performance experiment: Based on the findings in the workshop, choreographer Pipaluk Supernova and dancer, musician, and eternal rockstar Angela Muck Muñoz will propose a performance installation that involves the audience in very direct and engaging way.
Noise and poetry
This highly unusual performance concept invites everyone to live out their secret — or less secret — fantasies. Become a wild one, a star, a queen, a mad guitarist, a punk singer, a boy band hero, or anything else you can dream up. In today’s world, it only takes a few moments to become an acclaimed rockstar.
The project is also a ongoing research study, diving into all possible cliches within the iconology of ‘stardom’ — the archetypical images of men and women engulfed in glory and divinity serving as inspiration in identity searches and daydreams.
Find Your Inner Rockstar invites everyone to unleash the beast within, onstage. To play mad electric guitar, to scream your heart out into a microphone. You are not expected to be able to sing or play any instrument — actually it’s better if you don’t!
Playing with elements of surprise and challenge, the workshop provokes soul-searching moments when astonished audience members get to direct an entire set of show dancers and band members, to decide upon preferred costumes and genre, to be the lead singer! It doesn’t take long before it’s hard to tell who are the performers, the spectators, the musicians and the fans, as the different roles keep transforming and overlapping.
The game of finding your inner rockstar is an open space inhabited by strung-out characters constantly changing costumes and attempting to live out every possible cliche in rock’n’roll history. The space is equipped with various electric instruments and “stages” as well as an open costume department, a cool bar, and “hotel rooms”, symbolically marked and numbered. Here the stars write songs, make noise, throw televisions out the windows, host wild backstage parties or whatever their hearts desire.
The crash-bang concept of Find Your Inner Rockstar has already inadvertently produced a large number of original bands, along with amazing music and choreographic innovations. The fleeting nature of multiple-flux improvisations generates a great rush of freedom for everyone present. We laugh, we sing, we take on the most impossible challenges, with the barest of preparation. This is a transformative experience that can change — and has changed! — peoples’ ideas of what they can and cannot do.
Find Your Inner Rockstar generates a lot of poetry and a lot of noise — and a space where practically every transformation is possible.
